Common Roots Initiative (CRI) was named a finalist for Brickfish's "Tell Your Story... and Make a Difference" contest, thanks to hundreds of votes cast by supporters in December 2011. Only the Top 5-ranked nonprofits were included in the final consideration pool for the $50,000 social-media campaign prize.
CRI claimed the 5th spot after logging 488 votes and achieving a "Hot" viral activity ranking. Viral activity meant that CRI was able to garner attention across the internet on sites other than Brickfish.com. Plus, CRI gained votes on a global scale. Key participation came from not only the US states of California, Illinois, Kansas, Maryland, New York, New Jersey, Texas, and Wisconsin, but also internationally from countries such as Ethiopia, Jamaica, and United Kingdom. CRI's second-round entry page at http://goo.gl/VoTWp shows a "Geo View" map of votes and views.
"I'm glad that people showed their support for our cause by taking the time to vote. We appreciate all the people who made sure to vote frequently or every day," said Soumya Rao, president of CRI. "Being that we are a new and small organization, I'm overjoyed that we achieved a ranking of 5th amongst the 25 organizations that entered this contest. It shows that we can do anything."
The winner of the contest will be announced on or around January 31, 2012.
